NASA's QuikScat Monitors Increased Storm Activity
W. Timothy Liu, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory
In an unusual occurrence, four
tropical systems threatened the United
States last week, as depicted in this
image obtained September 26, 2002 from
the JPL-managed Quick Scatterometer
(QuikScat) instrument. QuikScat
revealed two mature hurricanes (Kyle
and Isidore) and one brewing tropical
depression (Lili, now Hurricane Lili)
in the Atlantic and Caribbean, plus
the remnants of Tropical Storm Julio
in the Eastern Pacific. White
streamlines in the image indicate wind
direction and are superimposed on the
color map of wind speeds.
